There is 4 group (Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D) which under recruitment notification issued and candidate get selected. Each group selection criteria is predefined and post for which selected is also written in the RRB recruitment procedure form.

Railway Recruitment Group A Vacancies
Group A This is the most sought-after service. This group is responsible for the overall administrative, technical and managerial function associated with the Rail transport. The recruitment is through UPSC involving written examination and interview. There is three examination system for entry in Railways namely 1. IAS and allied services 2. Indian Engineering Services 3. Medical Services Examination
Railway Recruitment Group B Vacancies
Vacancies in Group ‘B’ are filled by promotion on the basis of selection of eligible Group C employees by General Manager. Selection Board consists of 4 HoDs including CPO and HoD of the department concerned. 70% vacancies are filled through a process of selection primarily based on seniority and 30% through a selection test known as Limited Departmental Competitive Examination(LDCE).
Railway Recruitment Group C Vacancies
Recruitment of Group C officers is done through the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) in the country, which is 19 in number and under the overall control of Railway Recruitment Control Board of the Ministry of Railways. These RRBs undertake the recruitment process of the personnel in the zones and the production houses and other Railway departments in the zonal levels. They are responsible for inviting applications in the technical and non-technical cadre in the Group C.
Railway Recruitment Group D Vacancies
The Group D recruitment is done at the divisional level. This can also be carried out by the Headquarters of the Zonal Railway.
